Buying a pre-owned iPhone or Android smartphone in Pakistan can save you a significant amount of money. However, the used mobile market is filled with financial traps. If you accidentally buy a device that is not cleared by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), your cellular services will be blocked within weeks, turning your expensive device into an offline media player. Always make sure that you are buying a PTA approved used phone so that you are protecting your investment.
If you’re about to part with your precious cash for a used cell phone, stick to these 5 important diagnostic steps to make sure it’s legal!
1. Extract the Hardware IMEI Directly via Dialer Code
The first step is to get the 15 digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number straight from the operating system.
Access the phone’s dialer app and enter the #06# numbers.
The IMEI information will instantly pop up on the screen.
Dual SIM Alert: If the device has dual SIM or an eSIM combination, you will have two IMEI numbers (IMEI 1 and IMEI 2). Each slot should be checked separately – the seller may have paid registration fee for only one of two slots and the other slot may be blocked.
2. Check the Registration Status Using the 8484 SMS Service
PTA’s official text message verification service is the quickest if you don’t have an active mobile data plan when you examine the phone in a market.
Launch your messaging app and enter the 15-digit IMEI number, with no spaces, dashes or slashes.
To send this SMS use the official shortcode 8484.
In just a few moments, you will be notified with a text message from PTA that the device is Compliant (Approved), Non-Compliant (Tax unpaid), or Blocked/Stolen.
3. Utilize the Official PTA DIRBS Online Web Portal
The most secure and comprehensive method to confirm a PTA approved used phone is through the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) portal.
- Navigate to the official PTA DIRBS Portal using any web browser.
- Input the 15-digit IMEI code into the search field, pass the CAPTCHA verification, and click submit.
- The portal will instantly retrieve the device’s live database record, telling you its exact brand and model name. If the model on the screen does not match the actual phone in your hand, the device has been subject to software tampering or IMEI cloning.
4. Install the Official PTA DVS Mobile Application
The official mobile application makes the entire process easy if you are checking several devices or if you don’t want to type out lengthy numbers manually.
Install the DVS – PTA (Device Verification System) app on Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Open the app and allow it to have access to your camera, so that you may take advantage of the barcode scanner feature.
Just point the camera on the printed barcode on the actual packaging box of the phone, and you’ll immediately get the real-time legal status of the phone.
5. Perform a Physical Matching and Hardware Cross-Verification
The last and most critical step is cross verifying software data with the hardware components.
Check IMEI on the screen using the instruction #06# and compare it to the printed one on the original retail box.
Verify the IMEI number on the back of the phone’s chassis or on the SIM card tray itself, which has been laser-engraved.
Be wary of “Patched” Devices: A premium, non-tax paid phone can be “patched” with a legal IMEI from a cheap, broken feature phone.
If the physical IMEI on the SIM tray or box does not match the software IMEI on the screen, the device is patched and highly likely to get blocked during future security updates.
