In a bold step to aid the agricultural pillar of the province, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has literally rolled out the 2026 Wheat Procurement Drive. The program also presents a uniform support price and a rigid 72-hour pay requirement to guarantee financial solvency to the agricultural sector.
The news is at a critical time because the industry is struggling due to changing weather patterns, and this may be the indication that the government wants to stabilize the market locally.
Price and Payment Guarantee
The provincial government has decided the procurement rate to be Rs 3,500 per 40kg. In a move to close the historical delays that have been synonymous with the sector, the Chief Minister has obliged the authorities to make sure that farmers are paid within 72 hours after the wheat has been bought.
In order to be transparent and overcome logistical challenges on the ground, Strategic Management Committees have been established at provincial and divisional levels. These committees have the responsibility of real-time monitoring of the procurement centers.
The Power of the Kisan Card
A central pillar of this drive is the Kisan Card scheme. Currently, approximately 900,000 farmers are registered under this program, which has facilitated the disbursement of Rs 100 billion in loans.

Mechanization and Youth Empowerment
The government vision is more than mere procurement to structural change in the long run.
Green Tractor Scheme: The target number of tractors to be supplied to farmers is 30,000 out of which 20,000 have already been delivered. Local industry has also been brought about by this drive towards mechanization, with harvester manufacturing in industrial centers such as Daska having increased.
Collaboration with Punjab Government Program: To help incorporate more talented youth into the government sector, a new internship program has been introduced to agriculture graduates and other youth, to gain practical experience in governmental agricultural activities.
