The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially denied rumors about demonetizing the Rs. 5, 000 currency note. In a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, the Governor of SBP, Jameel Ahmad, made it clear that no plan is being made to get the high-denomination bill off the market.
This assertion is a relief to the market and speculation is now over making businesses and the general population doubtful.
Governor Jameel Ahmad gave the reason why they kept that note in that any action aimed at stopping the Rs. 5,000 bill will have a major disruptive effect on the market.
In line with this, Rashid Langrial, the Chairman, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) warned the committee not to even contemplate taking such a step. He has remarked that since the note was being used widely in high-value transactions, the instability in the economy caused by pure speculation could raise significant instability.

New Currency Designs Approved
While the denomination remains, the look of the currency is set to change. The Governor informed the committee that the SBP Board has approved new designs for currency notes.
The new series will feature:
Revised Color Schemes: To give the currency a fresh look.
Improved Security measures: to prevent counterfeiting and to enhance the longevity of the notes.
The Governor of SBP pointed out that it is impossible to do anything unilaterally by the central bank in the question of replacing the currency. This must be done following a stringent chain of command:
SBP Board: Approves designs (Completed).
Federal Government/Cabinet: Has to give official authorization to implementation.
Authorities once again stated that the next redesign was merely a matter of modernizing the design and security of the currency, and not taking away any of the current denominations.
