In a historic effort to revolutionise the country’s health system, the Government of Pakistan has formally banned the sale and use of standard 10cc syringes. The blanket ban, which comes into effect immediately, requires the shift to Auto-Disable (AD) syringes. This move is part of an effort to stem the worrying increase in blood-borne infections like Hepatitis B, C and HIV, which are often transmitted through the reuse of medical equipment.

The Urgent Need for the 10cc Syringe Ban in Pakistan

The major driver for the 10cc Syringe Ban in Pakistan is the issue of “re-used syringes”. In unregistered clinics and by untrained practitioners, the standard syringes are sold repackaged or reused, resulting in epidemics. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan has the second-highest per-capita number of injections administered, most of which are given unsafely.

Through this ban on the standard 10cc syringe, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) seeks to remove the element of human error or foul play in using an injection for more than one person. The new guidelines make certain that all injections are sterile and single-use.

    Understanding Auto-Disable (AD) Technology

What makes the AD syringe so special? Auto-Disable (AD) syringes are different to ordinary syringes in that they have a device that either breaks or misaligns the plunger after use.

Safety Lock: Once the medicine has been injected, the plunger can’t be pulled back.

Prevention: This stops the syringe being re-used to inject another person (even if the syringe is cleaned and sterilised).

Consumer Checklist: What to Look for Before Buying

With the enforcement of the 10cc Syringe Ban in Pakistan, it’s important for consumers to be vigilant. When purchasing medicines from pharmacies, ensure you:

Look for the ‘AD’ Mark: Ensure the “Auto-Disable” or “AD” mark is stamped on the individual sterile packaging.

Physical Examination: Check that the plunger has the locking ribs or needle-retractor feature of AD technology.

DRAP Registered: Look for manufacturers registered with the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to eliminate fake products.

Seal Integrity: Do not accept a syringe if the plastic paper seal is torn, wet or has been broken.

Impact on Public Health and the Healthcare Industry

The adoption of AD syringes is likely to save Pakistan’s health economy billions of dollars by avoiding chronic infections that require costly treatment. Although the AD syringes are slightly more expensive to produce than the traditional ones, they offer priceless “safety dividend”. The Ministry of National Health Services is working with the provinces to ensure that these new arrangements are followed in private clinics and public hospitals.

Pakistan’s 10cc Syringe Ban could save lives. As a citizen, you must insist on safety. Don’t buy or accept non-AD syringes and help Pakistan become a healthier, disease-free nation. Never risk your health for a few rupees.
