The local administration has declared a public holiday next week on Monday for the annual event of holy Sufi saint Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA) in the city of Karachi. According to official notification by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), all the municipal and sub-ordinate offices of KMC will be shut for the day. The annual Urs is celebrated with great reverence and in faith within the holy city of Karachi and thousands of pilgrims visit in celebration of this event.
Holiday Schedule and Date for Abdullah Shah Ghazi Urs 2026
The local holiday of Abdullah Shah Ghazi Urs will be celebrated next week on Monday, 8 June 2026 (22 Zil Hajj 1446 AH) due to the celebration of this event, according to the city administration’s press release. Today, all Government, Semi Government and Municipal offices working under the KMC will be closed today. To ensure public convenience, however, essential and emergency services, such as public hospitals, fire brigade departments, rescue services and Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation will continue to operate normally in case of any unplanned situation.
History and Spiritual Significance of Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA)
The Shrine of Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA) has been a symbol of peace, love and spirituality on the shoreline of Clifton, Karachi for more than a thousand years. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Sufi saints to reach the subcontinent and he was linked with the propagation of the ideology of Islam by compassion and good character. His annual Urs includes the traditional activity of laying a floral wreath (Chadar Poshi), the sufis’ dhamaal and the free distribution of meals (Langar) to visitors. It is a 1296th celebration of the Urs this year and the whole shrine complex has been beautifully lit up in colour this year
Impact of the Holiday on Educational Institutions and Private Offices
People are asking if this day will also be a day of closure for schools, colleges and private companies. It is worth mentioning that all educational institutes in Karachi and the entire Province of Sindh are already following a pre-determined schedule of the Sindh Education Department for two months of Summer Vacations for 2026 starting from June 1 and ending July 31, 2026. This local holiday will, therefore, not lead to further disruption of academic programmes. As far as private companies, corporate offices and banks are concerned, there was no separate closure notification issued by the provincial government or the State Bank of Pakistan, thus the holiday is applicable only for the public institutions under the management of KMC.
Security Measures and Special Traffic Arrangements for Devotees
For the three-day gathering of believers at the Urs, Sindh Police and the civic administration of Karachi have chalked out harsh security arrangements to keep the atmosphere peaceful and calm. There are closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed around the Clifton shrine, and walk-through metal detectors that will be in place at the entrances that will all be checked prior to entering the site. The Karachi Traffic Police has also issued an alternative traffic plan for roads approaching Clifton, in order to avoid traffic jams and enable people to go for jobs on Monday. In addition, special medical camps have been established within the premises of the shrine to give immediate first aid and medical assistance to the pilgrims if required.
