In a massive push toward youth empowerment and environmental sustainability, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has formally approved a historic expansion of the Punjab Student E-Bike Scheme. Under this newly expanded phase, the provincial government will distribute 100,000 electric bikes (E-bikes) to deserving and high-achieving students across the province on easy, interest-free installment plans.
The high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister focused on cutting down public transport burdens and shielding students from the continuous hike in petroleum prices. This eco-friendly transition is designed to provide safe, independent, and highly affordable transport for students traveling to their respective colleges and universities daily, while simultaneously combating environmental hazards like smog.
Detailed Subsidy and Financial Funding Breakdown
To ensure that the financial burden does not fall heavily on middle- and lower-income families, the Government of Punjab has injected a massive financial subsidy into the project through the Bank of Punjab (BOP).
Government Subsidy Per Bike: The Punjab government is providing a massive, non-refundable cash subsidy of PKR 70,000 on the actual retail price of each electric motorcycle.
Interest-Free Financing: The entirety of the financing framework is completely interest-free (zero markup). Students only pay the baseline manufacturing cost minus the government’s subsidy.
Zero Hidden Fees: The interest-free structure ensures that students are protected from inflating interest rates over the tenure of the installment contract.
Monthly Installment Plans for Male and Female Students
Recognizing the varying economic barriers faced by students, the Chief Minister announced two separate payment structures, offering an unprecedented relief package specifically for female applicants.
For Male Students
Down Payment (Upfront): A minimal token payment of PKR 14,000.
Monthly Installment: Only PKR 2,100 per month.
For Female Students (Special Relief Package)
In a major move to increase female mobility and promote women’s higher education, the Punjab government has waived key upfront costs for female applicants.
Down Payment & Registration Fees: The down payment and full registration costs will be paid entirely by the Punjab Government on behalf of the selected female students.
Monthly Installment: Female students do not need to pay anything upfront; they will receive the bike and immediately begin a smooth payment line of just PKR 2,100 per month.
Eligibility Criteria to Apply for the E-Bike Scheme
Students who want to apply for the 100,000 E-Bike initiative must fulfill the following regulatory conditions set by the Transport Department:
Academic Status: The applicant must be a regular student currently enrolled in an HEC-recognized public or private sector degree college or university within Punjab.
Age & Legal Standing: The applicant must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or Smart Card.
Driving License: The student must hold a valid motorcycle driving license or a learner’s permit issued by the traffic police.
Transparent Ballot Selection: If the total volume of applications exceeds the specified batch quota, an independent, transparent electronic lucky draw (balloting) will determine the final winners.
Applications will be collected via the central provincial web infrastructure at the official Punjab E-Bikes Portal. Notably, the second phase of this initiative is also scheduled to expand similar E-bike quotas to low-scale government employees across Punjab.
