Nirmal Purja: Nepalese Climber Missing After Broad Peak Avalanche in Pakistan

A huge avalanche has struck Broad Peak in northern Pakistan, leaving world-famous Nirmal Purja and nine other climbers missing. The incident has shaken Pakistan’s mountaineering community, which depends heavily on foreign climbers visiting the Karakoram range every summer.

    What Happened on Broad Peak

The avalanche hit on Thursday, July 30, as the team moved from Camp 2 to Camp 3 on the 8,047 metre peak, at around 6,600 metres altitude. Base Camp staff only learned of the disaster nearly twelve hours later, since the entire group lost contact at once. The Pakistan Air Force sent search and rescue helicopters at first light on Friday. By Friday evening, the Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that several bodies had been recovered, though none have been officially identified yet.

The group included five Nepali climbers, a Pakistani guide from Hunza, and international clients from the United States, Oman and China. Purja, a former British special forces soldier known worldwide for climbing all fourteen of the world’s 8,000 metre peaks in record time, was leading the expedition.

    Why This Matters for Pakistan

Broad Peak sits in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Karakoram range, alongside K2, the world’s second highest mountain. Every climbing season, this region brings foreign expedition money to local guides, porters, hotel owners and transport operators. A tragedy of this scale draws global attention, but it also raises hard questions about safety standards on Pakistan’s highest peaks.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) is the body that licenses expeditions and issues permits in Gilgit-Baltistan. Locals in Skardu and Hunza, where many mountaineering families earn their living as porters and high-altitude guides, are watching this rescue closely, since several of the missing climbers are also from guiding families in the region.

    What Should Change Going Forward

    • Weather and avalanche forecasting on Karakoram routes needs stronger, real-time monitoring, not just seasonal advisories.
    • Expedition operators should carry satellite trackers with automatic alerts, not rely only on radio check-ins.
    • Local guides and porters deserve better insurance coverage, since they carry the same risks as foreign clients but often without the same protection.
    • GB tourism authorities should keep families of local staff informed directly, rather than through media reports alone.
    • Trekking and expedition companies operating in Pakistan should be required to file detailed route and communication plans with the ACP before departure.

    Conclusion

The search for Nirmal Purja and the rest of the missing team continues under difficult weather in the Karakoram. Whatever the outcome, this avalanche is a reminder that Pakistan’s mountains, while a source of pride and income for Gilgit-Baltistan, remain unforgiving, and the people who guide climbers up them need far better protection than they currently have.
