The Lahore Ring Road Authority has implemented a sweeping increase in traffic penalties across a wide range of operational violations. Driven by the provincial “Safe Roads, Safe Punjab” vision and directed by Chairperson Safiullah Gondal several penalties have surged by up to 900 percent to strictly enforce highway safety parameters.
Under the updated schedule driving without a valid license incurs a heavy fine of Rs. 5,000 shifting drastically from the previous rate of Rs. 500. Furthermore, underage driving carries one of the highest individual penalties now fixed at Rs. 10,000. Safety compliance violations such as using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle or neglecting to wear a seatbelt have been raised to Rs. 3,000.
Speeding and improper overtaking penalties are now categorized by engine capacity. Standard passenger cars face a Rs. 5,000 penalty whereas high capacity vehicles above 2,000cc are subject to a Rs. 10,000 fine. Meanwhile, lane violations cost Rs. 2,000 and driving against the flow of traffic on a one-way section will result in an immediate Rs. 5,000 fine.
Commercial and environmental compliance measures have also been strengthened under the new framework. Overloading penalties have leaped from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 7,000 while illegal parking fees doubled to Rs. 2,000. Smoke emitting personal cars face a Rs. 4,000 charge which scales up to Rs. 5,000 for commercial fleets. Additionally, vehicles featuring tinted windows, missing plates or unauthorized registration numbers will be penalized Rs. 5,000.
