Punjab Extends CTI Contracts: What College Teaching Interns Need to Know in 2026

For thousands of young lecturers working in the government colleges of Punjab, the job security has been month-to-month. This week it was a little different. The Punjab Higher Education Department has issued a formal notification regarding the contract extension to College Teaching Interns, commonly known as CTIs, which will come as a relief for the nearly 4,000 youth working as teachers in colleges across the province.

    What the Notification Really Says

The Provincial Cabinet, in its notification of 28 July, gave ex post facto approval for the revision of the period of implementation of the CTI program. The original schedule was from September 1, 2025, to March 30, 2026. The official adjustment is now from October 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026. The Cabinet also approved an extension of one more month, extending the coverage to end in May 2026. All other terms of the earlier circular dated 13 September 2025 remain unchanged.

Why It Is Important to Pakistani Families

Many households in Punjab see a CTI post as the first paid teaching job after they complete their master’s degree. Unlike permanent lecturer positions, CTI jobs are temporary and entirely dependent on government notifications such as this. But a delay in extension paperwork can mean a delay in salary, which counts for a lot in a country where most young professionals do not have savings to fall back on and often support extended families.

What CTIs need to do now

•For your updated appointment letter, please check the official portal of the Higher Education Department portal notice board.

•As most disbursements are now done through bank transfer or mobile wallets, check with the admin office in your college to ensure your salary account details are up to date.

•Keep a copy of the circular dated September 13, 2025. Those are still your basic terms of service.

•Please follow the updates of the Directorate of Public Instructions (Colleges) for your division.

•In case your college has not received formal confirmation, please request the principal’s office to follow up with the director (IT) office coordinating implementation.

    The Bigger Picture

This extension is a small but real example of how government jobs in Pakistan work on a contract basis. There is rarely long-term certainty with internships and each extension must be approved by the provincial cabinet before it is official. The Punjab government’s decision gives some breathing space to CTIs and their colleges, but it also underlines why many young teachers keep asking for permanent regularization instead of successive short extensions.

    Conclusion

College teaching interns get a respite till the end of May 2026 with the latest Punjab notification but it is a short-term solution and not a permanent solution. CTIs should maintain close contact with their college administration and be prepared with documentation, as one notification often follows another in Pakistan’s education system.
