It is a big decision to pursue job opportunities in a foreign country, although it is usually accompanied by the threat of becoming victims of scam tactics. The Bureau of Immigration and Overseas Employment (BE&OE) has released an important public awareness announcement detailing how one can be sure of not falling prey to scammers when seeking foreign employment.
In case you intend to work abroad, this is all you need to know to prevent scams and have your application handled in a legal manner.
The Biggest Red Flag: Travel Agencies Cannot Issue Visas
The most important clarification from the BE&OE is regarding the role of travel agencies. In its recent social media advisory, the Bureau made it explicitly clear that travel agencies have absolutely no legal authority to issue or process work visas.
Their Legal Limit: A travel agency can only do airline ticketing and travel arrangements.
The Warning: The Bureau highly cautions citizens against giving money to a travel agency in the guise of visa processing, employment or acquisition of foreign work permits. When a travel agent offers you a job abroad it is a scam.

Step-by-Step Guide to Finding Verified Overseas Jobs
To ensure your job search is legitimate and secure, the BE&OE advises all job seekers to follow these official protocols:
1. Always Use Official Channels
Do not rely on random social media posts or unauthorized third parties for job listings. Instead, citizens should always visit the official BE&OE Foreign Job Portal. This platform lists verified, legally vetted employment opportunities from around the world.
2. Contact Licensed Promoters Directly
Once you have found and selected a suitable job on the official portal, bypass any middlemen. You should directly contact the concerned Licensed Overseas Employment Promoter (OEP) to start applying. Direct collaboration with an official OEP will make sure that your paperwork is treated legally and openly.
What to Do If You Are a Victim of Fraud
It is sad to note that most individuals find themselves being scammed only to part with their hard-earned money. In the case of being defrauded by a travel agency or an unauthorized person who is offering a fake job, you can sue.
The BE&OE encourages victims to immediately register a formal complaint with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Reporting the fraud not only helps you potentially recover your funds but also aids authorities in shutting down these illegal operations to protect others.
