The heat wave in Pakistan’s plains is being extremely harsh with a series of months breaking new all-time records. Naturally, escaping to the mountains is on everyone’s mind. But popular destinations, such as Murree, Kalam and Naran become over-priced and over-crowded choke points during the summer season with high hotel rates and blocked traffic.
If you want to be outside in the beautiful weather but don’t want the hefty bills or the too many crowds in the tourist hotspots, then you should consider visiting one of the other hill stations in Pakistan. However, there are numerous places in the country that offer a variety of wonderful experiences with very cold nights, great views, and affordable accommodations.
1. Siran Valley (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)
Located in Manshera District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Siran Valley is a place where the land is completely untouched by commercial commercialization.
Why It’s Perfect and Budget-Friendly:
June is a nice month to be in this region, with a temperature between 15°C and 22°C. The valley is covered with thick forest, fast-flowing streams and alpine meadows.
You will not come across high-end hotel rates, which are found in Shogran and Naran. Rather, local guest houses and local community home-stays offer low prices. There are also panoramic Kiangbai pasture grounds for camping at very small costs for budget travellers.
2. Ghizer Valley (Gilgit-Baltistan)
Situated in the northern part of Gilgit-Baltistan, Ghizer Valley, also known as “The Land of Blue Lakes,” is an excellent choice for those who wish to explore the north of Gilgit Baltistan, but are avoiding the hustle and bustle of Hunza and Skardu.
Why It’s Perfect and Budget-Friendly:
Ghizer is also home to the beautiful Phander Lake and Khalti Lake, where the water is clear as glass and the air is very peaceful.
The rates at local home-rentals and government managed motels are very affordable. The local food markets and freshly taken river trout are almost half as expensive as in the commercialized valleys.
3. Marghazar Chillas (Swat)
The summer holiday season is very busy in the upper regions of Swat (Kalam and Malam Jabba), but the serene community of Marghazar is a cool and affordable mountain get-away.
Why It’s Perfect and Budget-Friendly:
The “White Palace” (constructed of white marble by the Wali of Swat) adorned by emerald green peaks is a destination here.
Guests can also find a budget hotel in Mingora from where one could stay overnight and then head on the day trip to Marghazar without paying resort rates, which is 30 minutes from the main center of Mingora.
4. Leepa Valley (Azad Kashmir)
The Neelum Valley is the major tourist spot of Azad Kashmir, but the remote Leepa Valley, a few hours from Muzaffarabad, is a hidden gem with its pristine nature.
Why It’s Perfect and Budget-Friendly:
Leepa has the typical multi-story Kashmiri houses, as well as beautiful terraced fields of rice. At night, the weather is much colder, and blankets are essential even in the middle of summer (June).
The lack of heavy commercialization plays to a budget traveler’s advantage. Local accommodation will provide self-catering with local produce that is organic and locally prepared at affordable prices.
5. Fort Munro (Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab)
For the ones who can’t afford to go as far as the North, Fort Munro in the Sulaiman Mountains range is a great place to go for the people of Sindh or Southern Punjab (Multan or D.G Khan).
Why It’s Perfect and Budget-Friendly:
By being relatively close, it can greatly reduce your car’s fuel expenses and driving times. In addition to the tranquil Anari (Damis) lake, there are charming pine-covered ridges.
Fort Munro is located at a pleasant temperature of 24°C-28°C when temperatures in the surrounding plains are scorched by a whopping 45°C, providing instant and easily affordable relief from the heatwave.
