The annual inflation based on consumer price index (CPI) in Pakistan surged to 11.7% in May against 10.9% in April, according to the latest monthly statistical release. This sharp increase represents an acceleration of inflationary momentum, much higher than medium-term target ranges, for a period of 23-months.
The domestic transport sector indices are also up by an astounding 36.8% year-on-year due to geopolitical tensions as well as a prolonged supply chain congestion in major trade routes. The prices of kitchens and groceries for essential food items are seeing a ferocious increase in prices this June, as transportation and logistic costs are picking up pace.
List of Household Grocery Items Set to Rise in June 2026
The analytical information indicates that the wholesale and retail segments began pricing manufacturing, energy, distribution pressure in the back half of last month. Retail mark-up is expected to change significantly for the following healthy kitchens essentials as supply chains adjust to these overheads:
The price index indicates that the price of wheat flour increased by 11.21% on a month-on-month basis in urban areas, and raw wheat increased by 7.78%. This wholesale spike is heavily restricting affordable retail flour allocations this month.
- Broiler Chicken and Meat Products: Open-market broiler chicken prices have witnessed an abrupt surge, climbing by more than 48 PKR per kilogram over the last few weeks to comfortably surpass 540 PKR per kg, while general beef and meat products spiked 2.25% due to animal feed costs.
- Fresh Milk and Dairy Goods: Fresh liquid milk prices marked a 1.41% increase, alongside general dairy item increments of 1.46%. These adjustments mean processed butter, milk packs, and yogurt are carrying modified high-end price tags.
- Cooking Oil and Vegetable Ghee: They are 0.91% and 0.88% higher respectively due to the rising retail price for cooking oil and ghee, triggered by stronger levies on petroleum products and international maritime freight on imported raw palm oil.
- Staple Vegetables and Bakery Consumables: Potatoes posted a 4.01% increase in their indexes, while all commercial bakery and confectionery products gained 2.40%.
Housing, Power Tariffs, and Fuel Overhead Additions
The inflationary crunch is not limited to food, as domestic utility rates continue to weigh down disposable incomes. Official tracking of housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel costs indicates an annual collective cost surge of 16.78%. Furthermore, incremental hikes in LPG cylinder refills are adding severe financial burdens on both rural and urban consumers reliant on alternative fuel sources.
Eid-ul-Adha Proximity Affecting Spice and Condiment Rates
June also aligns with the seasonal demands of Eid-ul-Adha in Pakistan, prompting a sudden demand spike for essential cooking vegetables like onions, ginger, garlic, and tomatoes. While vegetable supplies saw a temporary deflationary correction in mid-May, festive season pressures have driven open-market prices of ginger and garlic up to 450–500 PKR per kilogram. Local price control magistrates have been ordered into active field monitoring to keep artificial hoarding from escalating retail prices even higher.
