The word “passport renewal” for years meant hours waiting, multiple visits to the office and long lines. But since 2026, the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP) has improved its digital system and citizens can now submit their applications for most renewals without visiting the office. The online Machine Readable Passport (MRP) system is now more user friendly and faster than ever, both for those in Pakistan and overseas Pakistan.
Eligibility for Online Passport Renewal
Please note that the online portal is for renewals only. You can use this service if:
Your passport is expired or is less than 12 months old.
You’re out of pages in your passport.
No information is needed to be changed in your basic data (name, date of birth, place of birth etc.).
Note: Applicants who are applying for a new passport or a lost passport would still have to visit the nearest passport office for original biometric verification.
Step-by-Step Guide to Online Passport Renewal
The process is broken down into five easy steps through the official E-Services Portal:
Account Creation: Register your account with valid email and mobile no. If possible, use sims in the country for overseas Pakistanis, or international roaming numbers.
In the Application Initiation section, click on the “Renewal” link. You will be asked to select the number of pages you have (36, 72 or 100) and either 5 or 10 years of validity.
Document Upload: You must upload a good quality photograph with a white background, a scanned copy of your CNIC/NICOP and the first two pages of your old passport.
Biometrics (Fingerprints): System requires downloading of fingerprint form. You will be required to upload your fingerprints as instructed, scan the form at 600 DPI and re-upload.
Online Payment: Any credit or debit card (Visa/Mastercard) can be used to pay fees right away.
Tracking Your 2026 Delivery Status
After you make a submission, you will never have to guess what’s going on with your application. By 2026, the tracking system is connected with real-time notifications:
Portal Tracking: Go back to the DGIP portal and see if the application is on the ‘Track Application’ dashboard in a status such as ‘Under Process’, ‘Printed’, or ‘Dispatched’.
Instant SMS Alerts: Alert your 11-digit tracking ID on your mobile phone to get an instant status update.
Delivered at home: Premium couriers services. The “Fast Track” option will deliver within 2-4 working days and the “Urgent” option will deliver within 7-10 days in 2026.
