Construction of Shahdara dam project is expected to commence soon, Islamabad’s first large-scale water infrastructure project in about three decades. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has officially released the builMargalla Hills check damsding tenders to solve the water scarcity problem of the city of Islamabad. The authority has targeted to finish the venture within a faster schedule of 20 months, instead of the original two-year time frame, said chairman of the CDA Sohail Ashraf.
A new reservoir will be constructed near the popular picnic area, Shahdara, which will add an important addition to the surface water supply system in Islamabad. Official CDA estimates predict a range of 5-10 million gallons per day (MGD) will come from the dam. The end product is subject to future technical evaluation and structural design arrangements, however.
Secondary Water Conservation Measures
The civic body is implementing a number of water conservation measures as secondary measures in addition to the main reservoir to secure the water table of the capital completely:
Check Dam: Building four check dams in the Margalla Hills including near D-12, Shah Allah Ditta and Saidpur.
Recharge Wells: To replace the dwindling aquifers, 100 recharge wells are being installed in the capital territory.
Future Reservoirs: Chinot Dam & Dotara Dam are being built in Simly & Khanpur catchment areas respectively.
Hydraulic synchronizations would benefit Islamabad in a long-term solution to the problems of clean water.
