The United States, Ukraine and Russian delegations have agreed in a historic deal in Abu Dhabi to trade314 prisoners of war, the first successful trade between the warring countries in almost five months.

The accomplishment through the painstaking trilateral talks in the capital of the UAE highlights the growing importance of Abu Dhabi as a safe and faithful location where foes can seek solace to talk over issues even when other diplomatic avenues are shut.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff characterized the negotiations as productive and detailed, but mentioned that despite the fact that there are still major differences, the consensus to release 157 personalities to both parties is a concrete humanitarian outcome of continued negotiations.

The treaty brings out the unique role that the UAE takes in conflict resolution, the offer of a stable and quiet system of high-stakes diplomacy without them having to play the leading role. Although the U.S. mediated political talks, the role of the UAE as the host and facilitator played an important role in establishing a conducive environment to reach an agreement.

Nobel Peace Prize Calls for UAE President’s Mediation

With a splash of realization, Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta, himself a Nobel peace prize winning author, publicly proposed that UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan should be considered as the winner of the Nobel peace prize. Ramos-Horta mentioned the discreet and effective mediation of the President and his ability to focus on humanitarian results, rather than political posture.

5,000 Captives Released: UAE’s Humanitarian Success

The most recent such mediation undertaking, which was an 18th successful attempt by the UAE to broker the release of captives, is the one which has seen almost 5,000 captives freed by Emirati channels since the start of the war.The UAE has developed a potential diplomatic win-win situation by at all times working on the status of being a partner to the peace process and not a part of the conflict itself. With more meetings scheduled in the next several weeks, as the delegations come back to their capitals in consultation, the successful release of 314 people is an example of the quiet and humanitarian-driven diplomacy at its best.
