PM Shehbaz Orders Private Sector to Run Islamabad Technology Park: What It Means for Pakistan’s IT Sector

This week has given a new push to Pakistan’s IT industry. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the complete transfer of Islamabad Technology Park to private operators to end years of delay and start the facility as soon as possible.

    This is an important decision

The Islamabad Technology Park has been under construction for a long time and the pace of work has been slow. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has openly expressed his frustration over the delays in a recent review meeting on reforms at the National Information Technology Board (NITB). “Giving the day-to-day running to the private sector is designed to bring speed, better management and business discipline—something government departments often struggle with on big infrastructure projects.

For freelancers, software houses and startups in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, a functional tech park could mean access to modern office space, reliable internet and a proper hub to attract international clients and investors.

    More push for digital governance

This is not a one-way move. The government is also pursuing wider digital reforms, including:

•Extension of the e-office system to subordinate departments and state-owned enterprises outside of the federal ministries.

•Digitization of records at government properties.

Getting NITB to provide simple and modern digital services to the common citizen.

•Completion of NITB’s rightsizing process with transparent hiring of key posts.

These steps are important for the common Pakistanis too. In addition, faster digitization means shorter queues, fewer paper files and quicker services at government offices, something that has been long overdue in a country where many still depend on mobile phones for banking, applications and everyday transactions rather than desktop systems.

    What to Watch Moving Forward

•Name a credible private operator soon.

•A realistic time frame for completion of the technology park.

•e-office expansion and its impact on service delivery at the local level.

•Job and investment opportunities for IT graduates when the park is opened.

    Enterprises’ Checklist for IT Professionals

•Watch for announcements on NITB tenders or partnership opportunities.

•Check back for updates on the completion of the technology park.

•Office space and incentive announcements are a must watch for freelancers and startups.

•Watch out for official government digital channels for updates on the e-office launch.

    Conclusion

The wait for Islamabad Technology Park has ended. Bringing in private sector management is a practical step that could finally bring plans into reality, giving Pakistan’s growing IT workforce a real base to build from. If the government follows a clear timeline and an honest partnership process, this could be a turning point for digital governance in the country. Now it is execution, not command, that counts.
