China Selects First Ever Pakistani Astronaut for Next Space Mission

The appointment of the first-ever Pakistani astronaut to China’s next space mission marks a major step in Beijing’s diplomatic efforts to expand its space presence. The historic declaration, confirmed by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) on Saturday, November 7, 2026, is the first time a foreign national will officially visit China’s state-of-the-art Tiangong space station.

Strategic Space Cooperation and Mission Architecture

The historic joint expedition is an integral part of the growing bilateral aerospace cooperation under Beijing’s strategic Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The chosen Pakistani astronaut will officially become a specialized payload specialist on the next Shenzhou-24 mission, which will be a highly anticipated launch by late 2026. The astronaut will perform a brief period of scientific research in space and then safely return to Earth on the space vehicle that is currently docking, Shenzhou-23. Designers have beautifully incorporated the national flower of Pakistan, Jasmine in the official Shenzhou-24 mission patch to commemorate this historic alliance.

Rigorous Training Profiles and Candidate Reserves

The bold undertaking comes on the back of a detailed inter-governmental accord between the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and the Chinese government, signed in early 2025. After completing a rigorous three-stage assessment screening process, two top Pakistani pilots were shortlisted for advanced spaceflight training:

Muhammad Zeeshan Ali: Passed intensive simulation tests at Beijing training center.

Khurram Daud: Underwent months of operational and mandatory Chinese language lessons.

One candidate will be the primary candidate for the flight seat with the second being actively involved as the critical mission back-up.
