Pakistan has again made it clear that it will be supporting the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) diplomatically and operationally. A top-level UN Security Council briefing on Friday Nov 6, 2026, reaffirmed by the state leadership the need for continued constructive discussions as the sole means of reaching a mutually agreeable and permanent settlement to the question of Abyei’s long-term sovereign status.
Diplomatic Call by Permanent Representative Syed Haider Shah
In the comprehensive comments made by Pakistan to the UN, Ambassador to the United Nations Syed Haider Shah suggested the state and South Sudan focus on continued diplomatic efforts. He emphasized the important role of bilateral cooperation for local regional stability especially given the humanitarian challenges on the ground worsened by institutional delays. Pakistan believes that international brokers should help in ensuring that the agreements are respectful of the local populations and that they do not result in reoccurrence of geopolitical conflicts.
Impact and Contributions of Pakistani Peacekeepers
A core element of the address focused on the critical contributions made by the national armed forces serving abroad. Ambassador Shah declared the contribution of nearly six hundred highly trained Pakistani peacekeepers deployed under the UNISFA banner in this regard with pride. They are actively involved in a large-scale community outreach programme, a wide-ranging programme of border patrolling and a strong civic security programme in the volatile Abyei sector. Through these tireless efforts Pakistan continues to solidify its long-standing global reputation as one of the world’s primary most reliable contributors to vital UN global peacekeeping missions.
