Pakistan-China Boundary Joint Commission Holds First Meeting to Strengthen Border Cooperation

This week Pakistan and China took a new step in their decades-old friendship. For the first time ever, officials from both sides sat together in Islamabad for the very first session of the Boundary Joint Commission, a body that had existed on paper since 2013 but was never put to work until now. For most people in Pakistan, this news may go by quietly, yet it strikes a real chord: how the border is managed, how trade moves and how the two countries plan to work together going forward.

    About the Boundary Joint Commission

The commission is the result of a 2013 agreement on the management of the shared boundary signed during a visit by China’s then premier to Islamabad. The pact always included a provision for such a commission, but it took more than a decade for both sides to actually sit down and make it functional.

The Importance of the First Meeting

The meeting was held over two days, on 16 and 17 September, and concluded with officials signing the minutes to ratify the agreements reached. The Pakistani side was led by a senior official of the Foreign Office dealing with China-related issues, while the Chinese side was led by a senior official dealing with boundary affairs. Teams from defense, interior, commerce, communications, customs and survey departments on both sides also participated, demonstrating how many government offices are actually involved in border affairs.

    The subjects talked

•Coordination between the two governments on the border.

•Movement of goods and people across.

•Joint surveys to map the common boundary accurately.

•The exchanges of people between the two countries.

    Why It Matters for Pakistan

If this means easier trade rules and better coordination on security, people living close to the border—in particular in Gilgit-Baltistan—might see practical benefits. It also strengthens partnership at times of heightened regional tensions.

    India’s Objections

India has hit back, saying the commission has no legal standing and there is no proper boundary between Pakistan and China in that area. Pakistan has vehemently rejected this, reasserting that the 1963 boundary agreement is valid and binding.

    Quick Checklist for the Reader

•This commission is about border management, not new land claims.

•The next meeting is expected to be held in China.

•Check the Foreign Office updates for any changes in cross-border trade.

    Conclusion

The first meeting is more than just a photo op. It is a working framework for how Pakistan and China will deal with border issues in the future, and the coming months will tell how much difference it really makes on the ground.
