Pakistan has once again been awarded a top command role in UN peacekeeping but this time with one of the world’s oldest unresolved territorial disputes. The Pakistan Army Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi has been appointed force commander of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). This is another proud moment for a country already among the top troop contributors to the UN, and it is worth understanding what the appointment actually means.

Who Is Major Gen. Jawwad Ahmed Qazi

“Major Gen Qazi has more than 35 years of leadership and operational experience in the Pakistan Army and in UN peacekeeping,” said Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN. His career has included general officer commanding of an infantry division, force commander in the Northern Areas and director general at the Ministry of Defence. He has previously served with the UN mission in Croatia (UNTAES).

Why peacekeepers are still needed in Western Sahara

Western Sahara is a former Spanish colony and the last remaining colonial territory in Africa whose political status has not been resolved since the end of colonial rule. Morocco holds most of the territory, while the Algerian-backed Polisario Front wants a referendum for the Sahrawi people, an agreement Morocco agreed to in 1991 but never implemented. MINURSO was set up to monitor the ceasefire and to help find a political solution. With a Pakistani general now at the head of the force, Pakistan Army officers are directly responsible for maintaining the peace in this long-running dispute.

    What This Means for Pakistan

•It is a mark of the confidence that the UN still has in the Pakistani military leadership.

•It bolsters Pakistan’s diplomatic position at a time when the country is trying to build international goodwill.

•It drives home to people that peacekeeping duty is serious business and often involves officers who spend years away from family in tough postings.

•It builds on Pakistan’s proud peacekeeping record of contributing battalions and commanders to UN missions in Africa, the Balkans and elsewhere.

What Pakistani Readers Need to Know

Such appointments may seem far removed from the daily life of most Pakistanis but they have real meaning. Each time a Pakistani officer heads a UN mission, it improves the country’s standing as a dependable partner in global peace efforts, which is essential to trade ties, visa goodwill and Pakistan’s image on international forums. It is also a reminder of the sacrifices made by armed forces personnel serving far away from home in unstable areas.

    Conclusion

The appointment of Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi as force commander of MINURSO is a modest but important occasion for Pakistan Army UN peacekeeping. It shows that decades of hands-on experience continue to provide Pakistani officers with access to the highest echelons of UN missions. With Major Gen Qazi’s takeover in Western Sahara, Pakistan can justly claim that its soldiers are once again leading the world’s peace efforts.
