Senator Professor Sajid Mir, a well known religious and political leader in Pakistan has passed away on Saturday at the age of 86 in Sialkot. He had been unwell for the past month and recently underwent surgery.
Sajid Mir was born on October 2, 1938 in Sialkot and was highly educated. He received an M.A in English Literature from Punjab University in 1960 and an M.A in Islamic Studies in 1969.
He was head of the Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith Pakistan for more than 40 years. He served as senator of Pakistan five times and was considered as a close friend of Ex-Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif. He was elected as senator on PML-N party ticket.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sadness over his passing. In a message, the Prime Minister said that Professor Sajid Mir was not only a respected Islamic scholar but also a wise political leader. His death has left a major gap in the political and religious landscape of the country.
He commended Sajid Mir for his stance against extremists and sectarianism mentioning that It was a good aspect of his credentials. The PM also sent his prayers for the senator, his family and fans in this sad time.
