Corporate Governance in Pakistan: Key Takeaways from the PICG Directors’ Summit 2026 in Karachi

The boardrooms in Pakistan are being compelled to re-look at their role. Business leaders at the recently held PICG Directors’ Summit 2026 made it clear that corporate governance in Pakistan is no longer about ticking the compliance boxes. It is about building institutions that common Pakistanis, investors and employees can trust.

What happened at the PICG Directors’ Summit 2026?

Over 350 directors, regulators, bankers and senior executives gathered in Karachi for the summit, hosted by the Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance (PICG). The theme, “The Showcase: Your Leadership, Your Impact,” set the tone for a day built around practical leadership, not dry theory.

“Governance is not only about meeting legal requirements today but about creating long-term value and stronger institutions,” said PICG Chairman Muhammad Ashraf Bawany, addressing the gathering. The chief guest, Muhammad Ali Tabba, Chairman YBG, made a point that struck a chord with many in the hall: good governance is not an extra cost of doing business; it is the very foundation on which a trustworthy company stands.

Why Corporate Governance is Important to Common Pakistanis

This might seem to be a matter for the boards of big business, but it is a matter of everyday life across the country. Banks, microfinance companies and family firms with good governance are less likely to fail suddenly, safer for depositors and more likely to provide stable, long-term employment.

AI and Financial Inclusion in Digital Banking

The tech discussion was one of the main highlights of the day. Abhi Microfinance Bank’s Kabeer Naqvi talked about how governance can help promote digital banking and bring unbanked Pakistanis into the formal financial system, an important point in a country where many still rely on cash and have limited access to a bank branch. A standalone session on AI governance, with experts from ACCA and BDO, explored how boards need to be actively involved in managing the benefits and risks of using artificial intelligence in business.

    Family Business Succession Planning

As most Pakistani businesses are family-owned, the Family Legacy panel paid close attention to succession planning, balancing family control with professional management, and keeping a business running smoothly as it passes from one generation to the next.

Quick Checklist for Directors & Company Owners

•Keep ownership and daily management separate.

•Have a clear succession plan ready well before it is needed.

•Set up proper board oversight for the use of technology and AI.

•Focus on transparency with investors and regulators

•Adhere to the governance codes of the SECP.

    Conclusion

The PICG Directors’ Summit 2026 in Karachi sent a simple but powerful message. Strong governance builds the kind of trust that helps businesses, banks and family firms survive tough times and grow responsibly. If Pakistan’s economy is to progress, boards must lead on accountability, not just compliance.
