Wahid was joined by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a high-level consultative meeting and the final terms of the JI Islamabad protest have been announced by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman. The party chief announced during the press conference in the capital that the party had asked the premier to give it another 7-10 days to consider the party’s main demand to remove the petroleum levy.
However, Hafiz Naeem asserted that the opposition party will no longer indefinitely postpone its planned march on Islamabad rescheduling the potential sit-in for mid November 2026 if consumer relief is denied. The core point of contention between the two sides rests on the procedural methodology of the tax removal. While the Federal Government proposes a phased reduction to safeguard state revenues JI demands an immediate annulment. The party claims that the federal collection generates roughly Rs. 150 billion monthly through the petroleum levy characterizing it as economic extortion amid soaring inflation.
The sensitive state-level meeting included prominent JI leaders Liaquat Baloch and Syed Farasat Shah. The government delegation comprised Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Senator Rana Sanaullah. The party has been staging demonstrations for over two months against elevated fuel pricing structures. Although a previous convoy heading from Multan was halted in September at the request of the Prime Minister the current leadership warns they are fully prepared for aggressive political mobilization if a structural relief mechanism is not finalized prior to the mid-November deadline.
