Four major changes have been approved and implemented by the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) regarding international New Zealand student visa requirements. Taking effect on October 27, 2026 these policy overhauls tighten in study work rights and institutional compliance parameters while simultaneously extending the post-study planning windows for graduating candidates.
The first major modification eliminates unlimited in-study employment privileges previously granted to master’s by research scholars. Under the revised framework these researchers must adhere to standard master’s program restrictions limiting employment to 25 hours per week during active semesters and allowing full-time work only during scheduled academic holidays. Secondly, INZ has significantly reinforced its internal assessment criteria establishing English language ability as a core deciding factor when evaluating whether an applicant can successfully satisfy their visa conditions.
The third modification expands regulatory oversight by empowering INZ authorities to immediately suspend student visa processing under a wider array of circumstances. This includes freezing applications while inspectors investigate allegations of potential non-compliance or fraudulent activities by a designated education provider. Conversely, the fourth change introduces a positive buffer for transitioning graduates. Students whose visas conventionally expired exactly one month following their course completion will now receive a two-month extension to plan their next professional steps. However, the authority noted that the existing fixed March 31 expiration date remains entirely unchanged for academic visas running on that specific seasonal schedule.
