The Government of Pakistan has initiated a revolutionary transformation within its civil aviation and travel documentation frameworks. Led by the Ministry of Interior and overseen by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, a historic policy shift has been approved to phase out traditional Machine-Readable Passports (MRPs). In the future, the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports is set to switch to full-fledged Biometric Pakistan E-Passport 2026 documentation.
This strategic technological shift will give Pakistan a competitive edge in terms of aviation security standards (ICAO standards) in the world. The transition will end the identity counterfeit operations, improve the network of border protection and provide Pakistani passport holders access to automated e-Gates all around the world.
Key Visuals & Core Structural Advancements
The transition from MRPs to modern e-passports introduces a shift in hardware architecture, anti-forgery mechanisms, and service delivery workflows:
Embedded Biometric Microchip: A physical electronic chip is embedded inside the data page. This chip contains digitized copies of the passenger’s biometric fingerprint templates, iris scans and high-resolution facial profiles.
Contactless NFC Antennas: This is accomplished with the help of Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology, which enables border controllers to easily scan the passport’s identity without requiring manual swiping.
e-Gate Clearances: e-passport holders can scan their passports at the e-gates of advanced airports worldwide to avoid manual immigration lines.
100% Cashless Operations: Beginning July 1st, all cash windows at passport offices will be closed to reduce corruption and streamline transparency.
Direct Home Delivery Logistics: A systematic home delivery model will ensure new passports are securely dispatched directly to the citizen’s residential address.

Step-by-Step Guide to Apply for Your New E-Passport
The application ecosystem has been consolidated into digital channels via the upgraded Pak ID portal and its supporting smartphone applications to maximize public convenience.
Gather Required Verification Documentation
Before launching your application, compile the following primary documents:
- Original, valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP).
- Your previously issued passport (mandatory if applying for a renewal).
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) if employed within government or military organizations.
- Computerized Birth Certificate or Nadra B-Form for applicants under the age of 18.
Digital Fee Payment (e-Payment)
Download the official Passport Fee Asaan mobile application or access the government banking portal. Generate your Payment System Identifier (PSID) number and settle the fee digitally. Keep the digital e-receipt safe, as cash payments will not be processed at the physical help desks.
Biometric Enrolment (RPO Visit or Web App Portal)
First-time e-passport applicants must complete an in-person biometric loop at their closest Regional Passport Office (RPO) or Executive Passport Office:
Token Issuance: Present your generated PSID receipt at the reception to secure a processing token.
Biometric Scanning: A live operator will capture your high resolution digital photo, iris scan and 10-fingerprint biometrics.
Data Verification & Approval: Your official details will be read to you before being sent to the Central printing department in Islamabad to verify for correctness.
Citizens can submit their photos, signatures, and up-to-date iris dataset directly via Pak ID’s mobile application without visiting the offices during normal renewals, wherein there are no changes in their core information. Your passport will be verified and printed and sent straight to your doorstep using domestic couriers.
