The Government of Sindh has announced a public holiday for all the educational institutes in the province which include public and private colleges of the province. The College Education Department had sent a formal notification that all higher secondary schools and intermediate colleges will be closed on the mentioned date. It follows the annual academic calendar approved by the provincial steering committee. The update is timely and is following right on the heels of the return of the academic session after the summer vacation, which is why it is extremely important for students, parents and faculty members alike.

Sindh College Holiday: Date and the Religious Significance

According to the official notification that was issued by the education department of the Sindh province, all schools and colleges in the province will be closed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. This is the occasion of the solemn mourning of Chehlum (20th Safar 1448 AH), the 40th day of the tragedy of Karbala for Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and companions, and is meant to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala.

There are two separate notifications from the School Education Department and the College Education Department confirming that the holiday will be universal. The day will be observed as a holiday in all major districts such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad. The administration also has to close down classrooms because of the massive mourning processions that occur along the main roads of the province, in order to ensure the safety of students and to help alleviate the anticipated traffic congestion.

This is to include a temporary ban on pillion riding, and enforcement of Section 144 around central procession routes to ensure law and order. Parents and students are encouraged to make appropriate travel arrangements and avoid using roads or other travel routes in the vicinity of congested areas.
