To combat rising traffic congestion, soaring petrol prices, and severe environmental challenges like seasonal smog, the Government of Punjab has officially introduced the country’s first app-based Punjab Electric Bike Rental Scheme in Lahore. Launched under the Chief Minister’s ‘Green Mobility Programme‘, this revolutionary transit project will deploy a massive fleet of 10,000 electric bikes across the provincial capital during its initial operational rollout.
The primary objective of this digitized transport service is to provide students, public and private sector employees, and everyday commuters with an eco-friendly and exceptionally low-cost alternative for their daily intra-city travel. This comprehensive guide covers the expected rental charges, step-by-step registration, and mobile app usage parameters.
Infrastructure and Network of the E-Bike Rental Scheme
The Punjab Transport Department (PTD) is working in collaboration with the Punjab Housing Authority (PHA), Lahore Parking Company (LePark), and the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) to ensure smooth operation of this automated micro-mobility system throughout Lahore.
Docking and Charging Hubs: The administration will establish charging and docking stations throughout Lahore, 300 of which are specialized, where users can pick up and safely return the bikes.
Smart Docking Stations: They are strategically located at the high-traffic terminal areas such as the major universities, commercial spaces and public secretariats, as well as the primary stations along the Metro Bus and Orange Lines to improve last-mile connectivity.
How to Rent a Bike Using the Official Mobile App
The transit service operates on a completely paperless, digital architecture. Registered citizens can unlock an electric bike within seconds using their smartphones by following these steps:
- Download the Application: Search for and download the official Green Mobility or Punjab E-Bike Rental application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store once launched.
- Account Profiling: Register by entering your full name, an active mobile number, and a valid Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) number to trigger biometric or digital verification.
- Locate Available Rides: The app’s live geo-mapped radar will display your closest docking station along with the exact number of fully charged, available e-bikes at that terminal.
- Scan to Unlock: Once at the station, use the app’s built-in camera scanner to read the unique QR code printed on the e-bike’s handlebars. The digital lock will release automatically, initializing your trip tracking.
Rental Charges and Payment Framework
The specific tariff structures per minute or per hour will be determined before the formal public launch, but will be highly subsidized, according to internal officials, in comparison to alternatives available in the commercial ride-hailing sector and fuel costs.
Discounted Slabs: Students and assuredly low-wage commuters will be able to avail special discounted ticket slots hence keeping the travel budget low.
No cash will be accepted at the terminals, which will serve as a means of keeping a track record of cashless transactions. All trips will be calculated dynamically based on distance or time and will be deducted from the linked mobile wallets such as Easypaisa, JazzCash or linked bank accounts, automatically.
Eligibility Criteria and Public Safety Regulations
To prevent vandalism and ensure public safety, users must fulfill a baseline set of rules to utilize the Punjab Electric Bike Rental Scheme:
Complainants must be permanent residents holding valid CNIC or Form-B documentation.
A valid motorcycle driving license or an official learner’s permit issued by the traffic police may be required during the app registration phase.
Every single e-bike is fitted with advanced anti-theft GPS tracking units monitored in real-time by the Safe City Command Center, and any attempts to breach operational boundaries will automatically lock the vehicle’s motor.
