The FIFA World Cup continues to be a symbol of the aspirations of billions of people around the world, and is still the greatest sporting event in the world. Pakistan had not made it to the World Cup but the FIFA World Cup 2026 should have been an unforgettable day for all football lovers around the world. Iqbal, 23, is the first player of Pakistani origin to play in the FIFA World Cup. The event has given a sense of pride to the South Asian region and it is a great achievement in the history of football in South Asia.
Who is Zidane Iqbal? Family Roots and Multicultural Heritage
Zidane Aamar Iqbal was born on 27th April 2003 in Manchester, UK. His own heritage is rich and multicultural, and comes from three countries. His mother is Iraqi Arab and his father is a Punjabi from Pakistan, Sahiwal. British and dual nationality meant Iqbal was able to take on the mantle of England, Pakistan or Iraq on the international stage.
He thus embarked on his international career with Iraq, making his senior international debut for Lions of Mesopotamia in 2022. Iqbal’s sense of belonging to any country is quite high as he wants to make Iraq his country of choice. He has often said that his father, Aamar Iqbal, is his biggest mentor and coach in football, as his father was instrumental in kick-starting his football career.
From Manchester United Academy to the Global Stage
Zidane Iqbal started his football career at age of 4 with his local football side, Sale United. With his natural talent he was recruited by the best scouts and at the age of nine, he joined the renowned Manchester United Youth Academy.
He quickly advanced in the ranks at Old Trafford and in December, 2021, was playing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time against Young Boys. He was in his first senior team with Manchester United and first time for a British-South Asian. After that Iqbal joined FC Utrecht, a Dutch team in the Eredivisie, where his midfield skills of accuracy, skill and composure continued to grow.
The Historic Zidane Iqbal World Cup Debut in 2026
On 16 June 2026 at the Boston Stadium, during the FIFA World Cup Group Stage, History was rewritten. Zidane Iqbal replaced the back of the Norwegian defence in the 59th minute of Iraq’s home match against Norway. The result of the match was a -1 loss for Iraq, but the final score line was a footnote to a huge cultural leap.
It was when Iqbal’s boots touched the World Cup grass that he broke a historic barrier. He was the first Pakistani blooded player to feature in the FIFA World Cup. What is fascinating, as Iqbal was sharing it with his emotional and proud family at the moment when it was trending on social media platforms after the game, is the fact that he wasn’t aware of these statistics until then.
Inspiring a New Generation of South Asian Footballers
Raw talent in football used to be plentiful in Pakistan and it was quite focused in areas such as Lyari and Balochistan. But the lack of sports infrastructure and international exposure has always restricted local sportsmen to the global arena.
The Zidane Iqbal World Cup milestone is a great example of hope and a model for the young hopes. Iqbal takes great pride in his unique identity and is not afraid of making his matchday boots special by embroidering the flags of Iraq and Pakistan onto them. His historic World Cup appearance has shown that the South Asian community, with world-class training, commitment and opportunity, can excel and be the best at sports.
