The development of Pakistan-German relations should be expanded systematically on all economic, academic and diplomatic fronts to tap into the vast business potential of both countries. German Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Ina Lepel spoke about the importance of deep structural engagement in an interactive session at the National Press Club (NPC) Islamabad under the premium international outreach initiative “Meet the Press.” The ambassador noted that although the bilateral relationship has taken a strong root, the level of current bilateral trade needs to be accelerated strategically.
Addressing Trade Stagnation and GSP Plus Status
Ambassador Lepel said bilateral trade had remained around €3.5 billion annually since 2017 and mentioned that there is an upcoming Renewal phase in Pakistan’s GSP plus status with the European Union in 2028. She mentioned some initiatives to improve trade and ensure preferential access such as an upcoming German-Pakistan Business Forum, through the Pakistan Desk of German-Emirati Joint Chamber in Dubai, and implementing the EU mandated compliance changes.

Escalating Academic Mobility and Regional Peace
Lepel congratulated Pakistan for its efforts towards regional de-escalation. In academic terms, the number of Pakistani students studying in Germany has increased from 6000 in 2017 to more than 13000 with the support of DAAD and HEC. The German mission has also introduced digitisation of visa processing, which helps to facilitate the mobility of students and professionals.
