According to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) a massive flour price hike in Lahore has turned the essential food staple into a luxury item for local citizens. The price of a standard 20-kilogram flour bag in Lahore surged by an unprecedented Rs. 833 within a single week reaching a high of Rs. 3,133. This sharp increase stands in stark contrast to the shifting commodity dynamics observed across several other major cities in Pakistan.
While Lahore faced a severe inflationary spike, the national average price of a 20kg flour bag rose more modestly by Rs. 29 settling at Rs. 2,976. Meanwhile, Karachi retained its position as the most expensive city for the staple with prices holding at Rs. 3,540. Larkana also experienced a minor weekly increase of Rs. 100 bringing its rate to Rs. 3,300.
Conversely, several cities enjoyed notable financial relief. Sargodha recorded the largest drop where prices fell by Rs. 133 to Rs. 2,800. Rates also declined in Hyderabad to Rs. 3,400, Sukkur to Rs. 3,120 Bahawalpur to Rs. 2,946 and Islamabad to Rs. 3,333. Prices remained completely unchanged in markets like Rawalpindi at Rs. 3,333, Peshawar at Rs. 3,300 and Faisalabad at Rs. 3,000. This stark regional fragmentation highlights localized supply chain discrepancies that continue to heavily impact urban household budgets.
