If you drive in Lahore and have an old traffic fine hanging unpaid on your record, this is the week to get it sorted. LAHORE: Lahore Traffic Police have launched a citywide operation against vehicles having unpaid e-challans. Special teams have been deployed at 17 major points of the city to check number plates and fine records on the spot.
Why the crackdown is taking place now
For years many drivers in Lahore simply ignored their e-challans as a sort of paperwork that would eventually be forgotten. That method is no longer valid. The operation is intended to pressure long-standing defaulters to pay up rather than allow violations to pile up unchecked, officials say. Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi requested citizens to adhere to traffic rules and pay their challans timely to escape legal complications.
If you get caught
At each of the 17 checkpoints, officers are stopping vehicles with unpaid fines and sending the owners to pay immediately. If the owner refuses or is unable to pay on the spot, the vehicle may be impounded until dues are cleared. This is a real financial and time cost especially for daily commuters, rickshaw drivers, taxi drivers and small business owners who depend on their vehicles for their livelihood.
CNIC Services, Bigger Picture Passport at Risk
The crackdown isn’t unprecedented. Punjab authorities are also considering barring habitual e-challan defaulters from passport, CNIC and driving licence services until fines are paid. It’s a sign that non-payment could soon affect a lot more than your vehicle.
Quick Checklist Before You Drive in Lahore
•Check challan status on Punjab Safe Cities app or on the official e-challan portal.
•Pay any outstanding fines through the bank, ATM or mobile wallet before leaving.
•Keep a digital or paper copy of your payment receipt in your vehicle as proof.
•If you have time to pay still, stay away from the roads near known checkpoint areas.
•Challans can be issued by cameras without stopping you on spot so set a reminder to check your record on a monthly basis.
Conclusion
For most families in Lahore, a car is not a luxury but a means of livelihood, whether it is for work, transporting kids to school or small deliveries. A forgotten fine and the related impoundment loss is a setback that can be avoided. It takes a few minutes to check and clear your e-challan status today; ignoring it could cost you your vehicle, your time and soon possibly your passport or licence renewal too.
