Dera Ismail Khan (D.I. Khan) Airport has been given a much-awaited good news by the residents of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as it is all set to become a commercial airport. Due to extensive renovations that have been completed, and the airport reopening in May 2026 after a long break, it is now expected to play an important role in the network of aviation in the area. Following the reopening is an important milestone in the future of local connectivity, trade and economic development.Â
When Will Flights Officially Start?
After getting clearance from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) and the Ministry of Aviation, the airport has now completed the final stage of safety checks.
Normal commercial flights to be available from the 3rd week of May 2026 onwards.
Airlines: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will be the first to make the move and depending on the demand of passengers, private airlines will follow it.
Primary Routes: The first routes will be served in Primary Routes D.I. Khan to Karachi and Islamabad where it will take less than 60 minutes to fly these routes.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Passenger Facilities
The airport underwent revision according to international safety regulations and an investment of considerable efforts was made by the federal government. Key upgrades include:
Runway Extension: Runway strengthened and extended to meet the requirements of the larger ATR and narrow-body aircraft.
New lighting and navigation devices: The advanced landing navigation and lighting system will now allow for landing at night and in the evening, and thus extend the range of flight hours.
Upgrading the seating in the newly renovated passenger terminal, as well as the security counter and Wi-Fi Internet are being upgraded to a modern standard.

The D.I Khan Airport reopening is not just a convenience, it’s an economic booster.
CPEC Connectivity: The airport is situated near the Western Route of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and will help engineers, investors and business people to move between China and Pakistan.
Overseas Workers: There are many workers and professionals from D.I. Khan, Tank and South Waziristan, who work abroad in the Gulf countries. The introduction of direct flights to Karachi and Islamabad will make their journeys to the outside world easier.
