Pakistan’s Foreign Office Gets a New Face: Amna Baloch Bows Out, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad Steps In

Change is coming to Pakistan’s diplomatic corps. Amna Baloch, the country’s 33rd foreign secretary and just the second woman ever to hold the job, is hanging up her boots after more than 30 years of government service. Stepping into her shoes is Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who currently represents Pakistan at the United Nations in New York. It might sound like a small administrative footnote, but this office actually touches everyday life more than people realise, from how embassies handle passports abroad to how Pakistan navigates ties with its neighbours.

Why Amna Baloch’s Departure Is a Big Deal

Baloch took over as foreign secretary back in September 2024. Before that, she had already put in time as ambassador to the European Union and to Malaysia, so this isn’t someone new to the pressure of representing Pakistan overseas. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar didn’t hold back his appreciation either, praising her steady leadership through what he described as a genuinely difficult stretch for Pakistan’s diplomacy. And she isn’t stepping away from public life completely. Once her retirement takes effect, she’ll head to Ankara as Pakistan’s next ambassador to Türkiye, so her diplomatic career simply shifts location rather than ending.

    Meet the Man Replacing Her

Asim Iftikhar Ahmad was born in Lahore back in 1966, and his résumé reads like a tour of Pakistani diplomacy. He’s served as ambassador to France, ambassador to Thailand, and even spent time as the Foreign Office spokesperson. His current posting at the UN, which started in April 2025, seems to have sealed the deal. A few other names were reportedly in the running too, including ambassadors posted in the UAE and the EU, but Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ultimately went with Ahmad after talking things over with his top advisers.

What Ordinary Pakistanis Should Actually Care About

    • Pakistan is juggling several delicate regional relationships right now, from Afghanistan to India to the Gulf states, and who sits at the Foreign Office matters here.
    • If you’ve ever needed help from a Pakistani embassy abroad, whether for a passport, attestation, or some other consular headache, you’ll want continuity, not confusion, during handovers like this.
    • New leadership often means certain files get a second look, so don’t be surprised if some policy tones shift slightly in the coming months.

A Few Things Worth Keeping in Mind

    • Mark the date: September 17, 2026 is when the transition officially happens.
    • Don’t go by rumors spreading around social media, instead stick to verified sources like Dawn or official government statements.
    • Normal embassy services should not be disrupted.

    Final Word

At the end of the day, this is what healthy institutions do: senior people retire, and capable successors step up. Amna Baloch leaves with her reputation intact and heads off to a fresh challenge in Turkey, while Asim Iftikhar Ahmad brings years of UN-level experience back home to Islamabad. Whether this handover actually improves things for everyday Pakistanis will come down to one simple thing: does foreign policy stay steady, and do consular services keep running without a hitch?
